✰ MONDAY MUSE ✰ GLORIA STEINEM✰

Alright Electric Lovers, your Monday Muse this week is
✰ GLORIA STEINEM ✰
✰✰✰
We’ve mentioned this badass babe before, and in these uncertain times with everything that’s happening politically and socially we think it’s important to look to our heroes—from the past and the present—to give us inspiration, strength, and to provide positive examples of empowerment to emulate and to aspire to. Gloria Steinem embodies all of the revolutionary and fierce feminist vibes that we’ve been feeling these last few weeks.

✰✰✰
“Power can be taken, but not given. The process of the taking is empowerment in itself.”
~ Gloria Steinem

To say that our girl Gloria is so much more than simply a style icon of the 1970's would be an understatement of epic proportions. She was and is a renowned journalist, a revolutionary feminist, and “one of the most visible, passionate leaders and spokeswomen of the women’s rights movement in the late 20th and early 21st centuries."***

✰✰✰

✰✰✰
Gloria started as a freelance journalist in New York in the 1950's and 1960's, and managed to gain a national audience after going undercover as a playboy bunny in order to report on and expose sexist policies and poor working conditions at Hugh Hefner’s Playboy Club. After failing to receive compelling and meaningful assignments from her editors—primarily due to fact that she was female—Gloria decided to co-found New York Magazine, and she began reporting on political and social issues of the time. This is how she first became engaged and active in the women's movement.
✰✰✰
✰✰✰
In her long and illustrious career as a women’s rights activist, Gloria Steinem has fought to legalize abortion, started female-driven magazines, spoken at rallies and demonstrations, led women’s rights marches, and has helped to form numerous political and equality-focused organizations with the intention of empowering others. She is one the most influential women and individuals from this revolutionary period in time, as she managed to rise and overcome oppressive conditions to help and inspire others to do the same.
